The Dauphin Island Woman’s Club held a check-presentation ceremony on June 24 at the Dauphin Island Welcome Center to award donations to several organizations on the island. The following groups reaped benefits from the club’s Gumbo Cook-Off and Silent Auction, held in conjunction with Dauphin Island Chamber of Commerce in April:

Dauphin Island Foundation Education Fund, represented by Lamona Lucas, received $1,800 for the purchase of laptop computers for the incoming fourth-grade class at Dauphin Island Elementary School.

Another $1,800 went to the Foundation to be held in escrow for the eventual development of a Community Center Building: Lawrence Trotter accepted that donation.

Brad Cox accepted $1,000 for Dauphin Island Fire and Rescue to be used for training and equipment.

$500 was designated for the Sand Island Lighthouse restoration project and was accepted by Pat Edwards.

$500 was awarded to the Dauphin Island Cat Coalition for spaying/neutering of feral cats on the Island: the donation was accepted by Caroline Norton.

John Porter accepted a $1,000 award for the Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuaries to be used for land acquisition for critical habitat.
